La Genèse, qui raconte l'histoire du premier homme, rapproche le nom d'Adam de adamah, la terre, car Dieu le créa à partir d'un peu de limon (terre fertile).

 

En fait, Adam fut d'abord un nom commun, qui désignait l'homme comme espèce, avant d'être considéré comme le nom propre du premier homme.

 

 L'islam considère Adam comme un prophète.
